Researchers from the University of Hong Kong have developed a new drone, combining lidar technology with a unique two-trajectory navigation system.
In real-world tests, it outperformed commercial drones in both tracking and collision avoidance, while flying at more than 20 meters per second.
The inspiration for the project came from birds’ exceptional flight capability to navigate cluttered forest environments at high speeds without hitting branches of trees.
Most important though is the drone’s navigation system. A flight-controller with excellent object tracking capability can successfully track someone jogging through dense forest.
